Get Silky Smooth Skin This Summer With Laser Hair Removal

Soft, sexy skin is always in season. But during the summer, when shorts, miniskirts, and bathing suits are the order of the day, having smooth skin is essential. Now, you could spend hours (literally) shaving and plucking, or plunk down hundreds of dollars over and over again for wax treatments to get that smooth look. Or, you could opt for laser hair removal and get rid of that unwanted hair once and for all.

Laser hair removal is a great option for both women and men who want to banish hair in pretty much any area of the body. And since laser treatment can often completely stop hair growth, once your treatment is done, you can slip into whatever clothing you like without having to worry or fret over stubble or growth ruining your sexy vibe. Wondering how laser hair removal works? We’ve got the scoop.

What to expect during treatment

Your laser hair removal treatment actually begins a few weeks before your appointment. During that time, it’s important to avoid tanning and excess sun exposure, as well as plucking and waxing. About a day or two before your treatment, you can shave the area so it’s ready for the laser. Right before your treatment begins, we may trim any stubble to the ideal length. Next, you’ll gently cleanse the area to remove any oils, lotions, moisturizers, makeup, or dirt, which can affect the effectiveness of the laser. The treatment session itself is quick, although the exact amount of time will depend on the size of the area being treated, your hair texture, and other factors.

Before treatment starts, you’ll put on a pair of special glasses to make sure your eyes are protected from the laser’s bright light. Then you’ll lie back (or sit back) and relax while we get to work.

During treatment, as your practitioner moves the handheld laser device over the treatment area, the device will emit rapid pulses of laser energy. Each burst of energy will be directed at an individual hair follicle. As the energy is absorbed by the hair shaft, the laser heat is carried to the root of the follicle, damaging it so future hair growth is prevented.

While laser treatment can be a bit uncomfortable (most people say it’s like the snapping of tiny rubber bands against the skin), it's a sensation that’s completely tolerable. If your skin is very sensitive or if you’re having a sensitive area treated (like the bikini area), you can apply a numbing cream ahead of time or use ice to numb the area so the laser application is more comfortable.

The science behind the treatment

Even though the laser energy damages the hair follicle and prevents it from growing new hair, the timing of your treatment is important. That’s because in order for that damage to occur, the hair has to be actively growing. What does that mean? Your hair grows in three stages: an active growth stage, a resting stage, and a shedding stage. It’s during the active stage that the follicle is engaged in growing new hair cells, and this is when lasers can work to destroy the mechanism that causes that growth.

Fortunately, the growth stage is a lot longer than the resting or shedding stages, which means during your first treatment, a lot of follicles are going to be damaged. But some of those follicles will be in the resting or shedding stages. And that means you’ll need to have a series of treatments, spread out over a few weeks, to make sure all the follicles are treated at the ideal time.

Once your treatment is complete, you’ll be able to go right back to your regular activities. You will need to avoid the sun for a bit, though, to prevent irritating your skin. At the Naaman Clinic, we use the Lumenis LightSheer Infinity laser system for hair removal, so you can enjoy better results in fewer treatments. Lumenis works on all hair types and all hair colors, which means it just might be the ideal treatment for you.
