Why Does Fat Deposits on My Belly and Thighs, and how Coolsculpting Can Get Rid of It?

If you feel like your fat is stubbornly gathering around your belly and thighs despite your best efforts, it’s not your imagination. While the battle against fat anywhere on our bodies is tough, your abdomen and thighs are particularly difficult for several reasons, and the solutions are even tougher to come by. Until now. Thanks to Coolsculpting's advanced, non-invasive technology pesky fat despots can be easily eradicated.

To help you figure out why your fat deposits, like precocious toddlers, go exactly to where you don’t want them, we’ve gathered together a few facts about fat and, more importantly, how you can fight back. Here at the Naaman Clinic, we regularly team up with our patients in Hoover, Alabama, to help them gain the upper hand on unruly fat.

The hormone effect

Men and women store fat differently according to their hormones, so we’ll start with the ladies. The simple fact is that the female body is programmed to store fat around the hips and thighs because of estrogen, the female hormone. Women’s bodies are designed for childbearing, so fat accumulates around your reproductive organs in order to provide protection. This fat is largely subcutaneous fat, stored just under the skin, and is responsive to estrogen levels.

If you experience a drop in estrogen, like during the years leading up to menopause, your hormones levels shift and the male hormones in your body can have more of an effect without the female hormones overriding them. Unfortunately, visceral fat, which is found deep in the belly around your organs, is more responsive to testosterone, which women have in small amounts. So as your estrogen dwindles, your visceral fat in your abdomen begins to increase. That’s why menopausal women who’ve always been thin may feel like they suddenly develop a protruding belly.

When it comes to men, body fat is responsive to testosterone levels, which favors muscle mass. As men age and testosterone levels decline, men tend to gain stubborn visceral fat around their bellies.

Targeting the fat

One of the biggest myths in weight loss is thinking that we can select our targets. If you set out on a fat-busting regimen through diet and exercise, you can’t target specific areas to shed fat — that decision is up to your body.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t lose weight with diet and exercise. You can, and you will. What it does mean is that you can’t choose where you’re going to lose the inches. In other words, all of those diets that claim to bust belly or thigh fat are promising something they can’t deliver.

This is not to say that targeted exercises can’t help reshape certain areas through toning, just don’t expect to be able to target stubborn pockets of fat. Your weight loss will be spread out over your body.

And now the good news

This frustrating state of affairs, however, is what makes our fat reduction technique work so well. Here at our clinic, we’re equipped with the latest laser technology called CoolSculpting®, which bypasses the biological programming of your hormones and destroys fat cells exactly where you want.

The CoolSculpting system, which is cleared by the FDA, sends a cooling energy through your skin without harming the surface area, to freeze your fat cells underneath. As your fat cells are frozen, they die off and your body eventually flushes them out through your lymphatic system.

With CoolSculpting, we can target the fat deposits in your thighs and belly directly, taking your hormones out of the equation. CoolSculpting shouldn’t be considered a weight loss technique — that’s work you need to do. But it’s a great way to put the finishing touches on your weight loss efforts by targeting those last few areas where your hormones refuse to give up fat.
